2007-08 Detroit Lions
The Lions seem to have their work cut out for them this season. In fact, the Lions have set an NFL record for fewest carries in a 16 game season. They also rank near the bottom in points, sacks, and interceptions. How to bounce back from such stats? Ticket holding fans in the Motor City have placed their hopes in a reinforced offensive, mainly draft pick Calvin Johnson. Does the defensive line show the same promise? It remains to be seen.
Previous Seasons
The Detroit Lions are one of those teams that are looking to do the worst to first jump this season. The team has been stocking up on talented, young players and this should be the year that they put it together and make a push to win the NFC North. They are still missing a few pieces though, and during the off-season the Lions, led by head coach Steve Mariucci and team president Matt Millen, made a number of moves to get their team one step closer to winning a Super Bowl.
In the off-season the team made a number of upgrades and picked up an insurance policy. Their insurance policy is veteran quarterback Jeff Garcia. Starting signal called, Joey Harrington, has been anything but impressive up to this point in his career and the team is showing that they are started to lose patience with him. The thought around the league is that after a slip up or two by Harrington that Garcia will find himself in the starting spot. Garcia spent a few seasons with Mariucci back in his 49er days and he was one of the highest rated quarterbacks in the league and was also named to the Pro Bowl three times during Mariucci’s stay in San Francisco.
Other moves the team made were picking up veteran defensive back R.W. McQuarters who has bounced around the league for a number of seasons. He was also with the 49ers while Mariucci was coaching.
In the draft, the Lions made some decisions that furrowed a number of eyebrows in confusion around the league. With their first pick they selected USC wide out Mike Williams. He was the third receiver that the Lions made their first pick in as many seasons. The other two were Michigan St. receiver Charles Rogers and Texas wide out Roy Williams. It’s understandable that the team hasn’t been able to lean on Rogers much in the past two seasons since he’s been hurt off and on the whole time, but they had a number of holes to fill on the other side of the ball. The old adage is “use your first pick on the most talented guy on the board, and then use the rest of the draft for needs,” but that just seems a little bit ridiculous. Now even more pressure will be put on Harrington to perform since he has three receivers and a running back around him that have All-Pro talent. If he doesn’t step it up this year expect the Lions to go back into free agency looking for a new QB.
The Lions did make a very high quality pick with their second selection though. USC defensive tackle Sean Cody was the guy the nabbed and he is a certifiable stud. In college, Cody always found himself in the right place at the right time making the big play for his team. He’s one of those guys who has a motor that never quits and has an incredible nose for the ball. In a season or two he and starting tackle Shaun Rogers will be one of the more feared defensive tackle combos in the league.
